What is cricket flour?
Cricket flour is a powder made from ground up oven-roasted crickets.
Where do the crickets come from?
We source our cricket flour from a local Australian supplier. They breed their own edible insects to produce this flour. The species of cricket we use is Acheta Domesticus.
How is it made?
After the crickets have reached the right stage in their development, they are put into a deep freezer. As they cool down, they go into a pain-free hibernation state before reaching a stage where they will never wake up. The crickets are then briefly boiled to remove any bacteria, before being dehydrated by roasting or in a dehydrator. They are then ground up into a fine powder after the removal of the brittle wings and legs. And voila! Cricket flour!
Is it humane?
Yes! Because the deep freezer puts the crickets into a hibernation state before they are killed, they experience a pain free death.
Could I be allergic to cricket flour?
If you are allergic to shellfish, then beware of crickets, as they are in the same family and could cause a similar allergic reaction.
